We work with Nicaraguan-based organizations to support their efforts to promote youth development and education.
Youth development and education
Nicaragua has a rich and diverse cultural heritage. The largest country in Central America, it is a beautiful and agriculturally productive country. However, young people face multiple challenges: Nicaragua has the second lowest literacy rate (83%) and second lowest GDP per capita ($7,300) in the Americas. Political and economic instability further limits youth opportunity. We leverage decades-long relationships in the region to provide funding and capacity-building supports to organizations serving youth in Nicaragua.
Fig Education is currently supporting the re-launch of youth-led media in Jinotega, Nicaragua, a rural department in the north of the country. The independent and self-sustaining radio station, Norteno Digital, is organizing a youth-led unit that plans and broadcasts programs and news reports. Youth learn sound engineering, broadcasting, and management skills. Further, they contribute to healthy dialogue in their community.
